A hyperbaric chamber is a soft inflatable tube that looks somewhat like a miniature bounce house. It helps patients breathe 100%-pure oxygen at a higher-than-normal pressure, which aids in fighting bacteria and encouraging the release of stem cells and growth factors. If you want to achieve faster healing, Face Forward’s state-of-the-art hyperbaric chamber in Houston may be just what you’ve been looking for.

What Is Hyperbaric Chamber Therapy?

Oxygen is a crucial factor in the healing of injured body tissues. Hyperbaric chamber therapy—also known as hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT)—helps patients breathe in oxygen at high pressure. This boosts the body’s natural healing processes.

The air pressure inside a hyperbaric chamber is 1.6 times higher than the air pressure that we normally breathe. This helps the lungs receive more oxygen. More oxygen gets into the blood, and this helps fight infection and stimulates wound healing.

Benefits of Hyperbaric Chamber Therapy

Potential benefits for post-surgery and wound healing:

  • Improves the wound-healing process (plasma restores oxygen to tissues)
  • Encourages synthesis of protein, proliferation of cells, and angiogenesis. These are important when it comes to tissue integrity and functionality.
  • Disables bacterial toxins
  • Increases the concentration of oxygen in the tissues
  • Stimulates formation of new blood vessels

Potential benefits for general health and wellness (especially for athletes):

  • Introduces much more oxygen to tissues that have been damaged
  • Increases stem cell activation
  • Allows for faster regeneration of bone and cartilage
  • Reduces muscle fatigue and exhaustion
  • Repairs injuries to the ACL and other ligaments
  • Heals muscle strains and fatigue
  • Regenerates damaged cartilage
  • Helps with clarity, stamina, and focus

Am I a Good Candidate for Hyperbaric Chamber Therapy?

Hyperbaric chamber therapy can be a great solution for anyone who needs help treating injuries, improving recovery from surgery or exercise, and healing certain health conditions faster. However, this treatment may not be for you if you:

  • Went through ear surgery in the past
  • Have or recently experienced ear trauma, a cold, or a fever
  • Have a history of ear conditions such as pressure intolerance, middle ear infections, or tinnitus
  • Have severe claustrophobia

Setting up an initial consultation can help determine whether hyperbaric chamber therapy is for you. You’ll also be advised how many sessions you’ll have to come in for depending on your condition.

What Is Hyperbaric Chamber Therapy Like?

Wear comfortable clothes. The chamber has a soft mattress and pillow enclosed in a tube. Once you’re ready, you will be asked to lie down in the hyperbaric chamber.

The chamber will be sealed, and the pressure will slowly increase over 15 minutes. You will wear a nasal cannula or face mask to improve oxygen intake. You may feel your ears popping at first, similar to taking off in an airplane.

The length of the therapy and the number of sessions will be determined based on your treatment goals. Most people take 60-minute dives, but 90 minutes is also an option.

While in the tube, you can take a nap, read a book or magazine, or scroll through social media on your phone. Note that the airflow is generally too loud to talk on the phone, but it is safe to text, use social media, and email during a session.

After Your Session

Hyperbaric chamber therapy requires no downtime or recovery time, and patients can immediately return to their everyday activities. It’s normal to temporarily feel a bit more tired or hungry than usual after your treatment.
