Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating) Treatment

What is Hyperhidrosis?

There are two types of hyperhidrosis: primary and secondary.

Primary hyperhidrosis, which is also known as focal hyperhidrosis, is the leading cause of excessive sweating for no apparent reason in the feet, hands, face, and underarms. Secondary hyperhidrosis, which is also generalized as simply hyperhidrosis, is the primary cause of excessive sweating throughout the entire body or within a more substantial portion of the body. This type is caused by medical conditions, medications, or extreme heat.

Is Botox/Dysport good for underarm sweating?

According to the International Hyperhidrosis Society, underarm Botox injections can reduce underarm sweating by 82–87%. The effects can typically last 6-8 months, or up to 14 months in some cases. People who receive underarm Botox injections tend to see results 2–4 days after treatment. Body odor decreases, too. The funky smell from sweaty pits is made by bacteria that thrive in warm, moist places. Eliminate the moisture and the odor goes away as well.

Is Botox/Dysport safe for underarm sweating?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved this treatment for the underarms.

Can Botox/Dysport be used for sweating in places other than the armpits?

Findings from some research studies suggest that this treatment may be effective for other areas of the body. It may help post-menopausal women who sweat excessively on the head. It may be effective for excessive sweating that affects the hands and feet.

How does Botox/Dysport for sweating work?

The injections temporarily block a chemical in the body that stimulates the sweat glands. The glands are not damaged, but the signaling molecules that create sweating are blocked for months.

Most patients notice results four to five days after receiving treatment.Reduced sweating lasts about four to six months, and sometimes longer. When the excessive sweating returns, you can be retreated.

How many units of Botulinum toxin do I need for underarm sweating?

Botulinum toxin, Botox or Dysport, will be used in this treatment. Generally, about 50 units on each armpit, for 100 units total. They are usually priced per unit, and the cost can vary. At Face Forward Houston, we sell a package for both armpits for $999

What is the side effect of treatment?

Botulinum toxin injections have almost no side effects on armpits, except temporary discomfort from the injection side. Patients can return to their everyday activities after receiving their underarm treatment. Patients should expect a noticeable reduction in sweating in the treated area after two to seven days.

Does it hurt?

Pain is very minimal. Dr. Regina Rodman or her Aesthetic nurse practitioner, Lucy Chen, will numb the area with ice and use a distraction vibration device to help ease any discomfort. Because patients only need to have very tiny amounts injected in many areas of the underarms, the pain is minimal. When performed properly, patients have little pain or discomfort.

The results?

You can raise your arms without worry, and you can go about your day feeling cool, comfortable and confident!
