Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a great option for patients who are experiencing hair loss and are looking for a minimally invasive way to increase hair density without surgery or side effects. Platelet rich plasma is the injection of your own platelets into the vascular layer of your scalp.
How it works: the plasma in our blood is filled with platelets that contain healing growth factors. The growth factors send signals to the surrounding tissue to regenerate and multiple. When the platelets are injected into an area, they send a message to grow healthier, stronger tissue. This has been used in wound healing for many years and is not being used as a benefit in hair growth. When the PRP is injected into the scalp, the growth factors and stem cells work together to reverse the miniaturization of the hair follicle and jump start dormant hair back into the growth phase.
What it does:
- Increases blood supply to the follicle
- Increases shaft size
- Triggers and maintains the growth phase
- Controls hair growth cycle
- Decreases hair loss
Who is a candidate?
PRP is best for patients with patients with thinning hair. It does not work in areas that are completely bald, but it can take very fine hairs and make them more robust.
It is appropriate for men and women.
This treatment is also appropriate for patients who do not have hair loss, but do have thin hair and wish to add volume.
A collection tube is used to draw your own blood
This is placed in a centrifuge, which separates the red blood cells from the platlet rich plasma (PRP).
The PRP is then mixed with a fibrin matrix, which provides a scaffold for the platelets and allows the product to be effective for a longer period of time.
This is then injected into the scalp with small needles in areas that need improvement.
Your Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) will be performed in Dr. Regina Rodman‘s surgery center located in Houston, TX
How many treatments will I need?
This depends on the severity of hair thinning and the area needed to treat. In your consult with Dr Rodman, you will decide together on a plan for treatment. Most patients need 4-7 treatments, spaced 1 month apart. We then recommend maintenance treatment 2 times per year.
How long does it take?
Dr. Rodman applies numbing cream before the procedure, and this will sit on the scalp for about 30 minutes. The procedure itself take less than 15 minutes.
Does it hurt?
Dr. Rodman applies numbing cream to the area before the procedure, and patient report they feel very little pain.
How long is the recovery?
There is no downtime after the procedure. Patients may resume normal activities immediately after PRP injections. Patients may wash and style their hair per normal after a treatment.
